Directions for Planting and Care

Planting and caring for your First Editions® Sunset Magic™ Crape Myrtle is easy and rewarding. Follow these steps to ensure a thriving plant in your garden:

Planting

Select the Right Location: Choose a sunny spot in your garden for optimal growth. Sunset Magic™ Crape Myrtle thrives in full sun, which is essential for vibrant blooms and healthy foliage.

Prepare the Soil: Ensure the soil is well-draining and slightly acidic to neutral. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, amend it with compost to improve drainage and support the plant’s growth.

Dig a Proper Hole: Dig a hole that is about twice as wide as the root ball and the same depth. This will allow the roots to spread and establish a strong foundation.

Plant the Tree: Gently remove the plant from its container and place it in the center of the hole. Fill in the hole with native soil, and lightly tamp it down to remove air pockets.

Water Thoroughly: Once planted, give your crape myrtle a deep watering to help the soil settle around the roots and ensure proper hydration.

Care Guide

Regular Watering: While First Editions® Sunset Magic™ is drought-tolerant once established, it will benefit from regular watering during dry periods, especially in the first year after planting. Be careful not to overwater, as it prefers well-drained soil.

Mulching: To help retain moisture and prevent weed growth, apply a layer of organic mulch 2-3 inches deep around the base of the plant. Be sure to keep the mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
