Planting and caring for the Jane Japanese Magnolia is easy, offering stunning flowers and hardy growth. Follow these steps for success in your garden:

Planting

Select the Right Location: Choose a well-lit spot with either full sun or partial shade. The Jane Japanese Magnolia thrives in areas with plenty of light but can tolerate some shade.

Prepare the Soil: This magnolia prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Avoid overly compacted or poorly drained soil, as it can cause root rot. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, amend it with organic matter to improve drainage.

Dig the Hole: Dig a hole that is at least twice the width of the root ball and the same depth. This allows the roots enough space to spread out and establish.

Plant the Magnolia: Carefully remove the tree from its pot, gently loosen the roots, and place the root ball in the hole. Ensure that the top of the root system is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill with native soil and lightly pack it down to eliminate air pockets.

Water Thoroughly: After planting, water your magnolia thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots. Make sure the soil is moist but not soggy.

Care

Watering: Water the tree deeply once a week, especially in the first few years while it is establishing. Once mature, the tree is moderately drought-tolerant but still benefits from regular watering during dry periods.

Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer, such as 8-8-8, in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Fertilize at a rate of one pound per 100 square feet of planted area. Do not fertilize until the tree is well established in its new home.

Mulching: Create a 2-foot-wide mulch ring around the base of the tree, leaving a 3-4 inch gap around the trunk to prevent rot. In colder climates, add 2 more inches of mulch in winter to protect the roots from freezing.

Pruning: Prune the tree lightly in late winter to remove any dead or damaged branches. Avoid heavy pruning of mature trees as they can be easily shaped without much intervention.

Winter Protection: If the tree is young or you’re using it as a shrub, it’s recommended to cover it during colder weather. Applying mulch around the base can also help protect the roots from freezing.
